Silfra Fissure Snorkeling & Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel Combo from Reykjavík

Silfra Fissure Snorkeling & Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel Combo from Reykjavík

Combine subterranean lava caving with one of the world’s rarest snorkeling spots: float in crystal water between continental plates at Silfra and explore the raw sculpted tunnels of Raufarhólshellir. This full-day combo from Reykjavík pairs geology, history and hands-on adventure.

The Experience

Before You Go

Arrive Early for Both Meeting Points

Allow 15–30 minutes to find parking at Thingvellir P5 and to check in at Raufarhólshellir; guides leave promptly.

Dress in Layers and Bring a Change

Temperatures vary dramatically—wear thermal base layers for both the cave and post-snorkel; bring dry clothes and a towel.

Protect Your Eyesight

You can’t wear glasses under snorkeling goggles; bring contact lenses or prescription snorkeling goggles if needed.

Respect Water Quality

Do not apply sunscreen or lotions before snorkeling—Silfra’s water is a protected, filtered glacial source and contamination is a real risk.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Bakarameistarinn bakery in Reykjavík — the casual midday pick-up spot for the combo and a good place to taste Icelandic rye and pastries
  • Almannagjá gorge viewpoint — a short walk from Silfra offering dramatic rift-valley perspectives without the crowds

Wildlife

  • Brown trout and small char visible in Silfra’s clear water
  • Arctic fox (rarely seen) and numerous bird species around Þingvellir

Conservation Note

Silfra’s water is exceptionally pure and ecologically sensitive — guides enforce strict rules to prevent contamination and visitors should avoid lotions and unnecessary touching of rock or vegetation.

Þingvellir is the historic site of Iceland’s parliament (Alþingi), founded in 930 AD; its rift valley also marks the slow divergence of the Eurasian and North American plates.
