Full-Throttle to Phi Phi: Snorkeling Bamboo Island and Maya Bay by Speedboat

Full-Throttle to Phi Phi: Snorkeling Bamboo Island and Maya Bay by Speedboat

Limestone cathedrals, neon water, and an easy day’s dash across the Andaman Sea.

Phuket, Phuket Province

Dawn at Royal Phuket Marina arrives with a soft hiss of hose water on fiberglass hulls and the quiet thrill that comes before a fast start. The crew moves in practiced rhythm—fuel checks, fins stacked, masks defogged—while the Andaman Sea waits like an athlete at the blocks. Once the throttles roll forward, Phuket falls away in a scatter of resort roofs and mangroves, and the water turns from pewter to a hard, knowing turquoise. The boat reads the swells like Braille. Spray mist lifts and the wind starts writing salt into your hair.

Trail Wisdom

Beat the Big Boats

Opt for an early departure to reach Pileh and Maya Bay before the flotilla arrives; calmer seas and clearer photos are the payoff.

Rash Guard Over Sunscreen

Wear a long-sleeve UPF top to protect skin and minimize chemical runoff; reef-safe sunscreen goes on exposed areas only.

Mind the Fin Kick

Keep your body horizontal and fins high to avoid striking coral; practice in sandy shallows before hovering over reef.

Motion Management

Take seasickness medication 30–60 minutes before departure and choose a seat aft near the centerline for the smoothest ride.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Early-morning Pileh Lagoon when the water goes mirror-flat
  • Outer reef shelf off Bamboo Island’s eastern arc for better visibility

Wildlife

Blacktip reef sharks, Long-tailed macaques

Conservation Note

Maya Bay’s 2018–2022 closure allowed coral and seagrass recovery; boats now anchor outside the bay and visitors follow boardwalk routes. Do not touch coral, feed wildlife, or leave trash.

The Phi Phi Islands are part of Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, established in 1983; Viking Cave has long been a center for swiftlet nest harvesting and features historic wall drawings.

Seasonal Guide

spring

Best for: Warm water snorkeling, Long daylight hours

Challenges: High heat and UV, Occasional early monsoon squalls

March–May runs hot with strong sun and generally good visibility. Expect scorching mid-days; hydrate and seek shade between snorkel sets.

summer

Best for: Lush island scenery, Fewer crowds

Challenges: Southwest monsoon swells, Intermittent rain and reduced visibility

June–August sees variable seas and passing storms. Trips run when conditions allow; the islands are vivid green and quieter.

fall

Best for: Value travelers, Dramatic skies

Challenges: Peak monsoon in September, Choppy crossings possible

September–November is transitional; conditions can swing from calm to rough. Flexible plans and motion meds are smart.

winter

Best for: Calm seas, Peak visibility

Challenges: Higher demand, Hot midday sun persists

December–February is prime: light winds, glassy water, and excellent snorkeling. Book early and bring sun protection.

Photographer's Notes

For Phi Phi’s limestone drama, shoot wide at 16–24mm equivalent; a circular polarizer cuts glare from water and deepens color. Underwater, use a red filter or manual white balance around 3–6 meters to counter blue-green cast. Shoot early for calm water reflections in Pileh; keep the sun behind your shoulder to light subjects. Drones require permits—ground your flight unless legally cleared.

What to Bring

Long-sleeve UPF Rash GuardEssential

Provides reliable sun protection and reduces the need for sunscreen over coral reefs.

Reef-safe Sunscreen (Non-nano Zinc)Essential

Protects skin while minimizing chemical impact on sensitive marine ecosystems.

Dry Bag (10–15L)

Keeps phone, cash for park fees, and a spare shirt dry during beach landings and spray.

Motion Sickness Tablets

Helpful during monsoon season or if you’re sensitive to chop on open-water crossings.

Common Questions

Do I need to be an experienced swimmer to join?

Basic swimming ability is recommended; life jackets are provided and the guide selects calm sites. If you are not confident, tell the crew so they can assist.

Is Maya Bay open for swimming?

No. To protect new corals and seagrass, swimming off Maya Bay’s beach is prohibited. Visits are by boardwalk access from Loh Samah side when open.

Are national park fees included?

Fees for Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park are typically paid in cash on arrival (about 400 THB per adult). Bring small bills.

What marine life might I see?

Expect colorful reef fish, anemones with clownfish, giant clams, and occasionally blacktip reef sharks or blue-spotted rays in deeper sections.

Is lunch provided and are there vegetarian options?

A set lunch on Phi Phi Don is included; vegetarian options are commonly available. Inform the operator in advance for dietary needs.

Will the trip run in bad weather?

Trips may be rescheduled or rerouted if seas are unsafe, especially during monsoon months. Safety calls are made by the captain and park authorities.

What to Pack

UPF rash guard to outsmart intense UV; reef-safe sunscreen to protect corals; dry bag for phone, cash, and a spare tee; motion tablets if you’re sensitive to chop.

Did You Know

Maya Bay was closed to visitors from 2018 to 2022 to restore its damaged ecosystem and is now managed with strict protections—boats cannot enter the bay and swimming at the beach is banned.

Quick Travel Tips

Carry cash for the national park fee; confirm pickup time the evening prior; wear swimwear under clothes to speed up first snorkel stop; bring a lightweight sarong for sun shade and marina modesty.

Local Flavor

After docking, head to Phuket Old Town for street-side roti and iced tea, or try a Southern Thai curry at a local shop. On Phi Phi Don, beachside fruit shakes and grilled seafood pair perfectly with sunset views over Tonsai Bay.

Logistics Snapshot

Closest airport: Phuket International (HKT). Departure pier: Royal Phuket Marina. Drive time: 20–60 minutes from most Phuket beaches. Cell service: generally good on Phuket, patchy offshore. Permits/fees: National park fee (cash) required; tour provides masks, snorkels, fins, lunch, and hotel transfers in Phuket province.

Sustainability Note

You’re visiting a recovering marine park—pack out all trash, use reef-safe sunscreen sparingly, never stand on coral, and keep a respectful distance from wildlife. Your small actions matter in high-traffic ecosystems.
